About the player
Santiago Cartagena came through the academy at Nacional and made his first-team debut for the Montevideo side in September 2020. That same year, he was part of the squad that won the Uruguayan Primera División title.
In 2023 the two sides agreed to terminate his contract. Cartagena left as a free agent and, that same August, signed a two-year deal with Deportivo Maldonado.
In May 2024, he received his first call-up to the Uruguay Local squad, drawn from players in the domestic league, making his debut in a goalless draw against Costa Rica. He has since made three appearances for that side without scoring.
