About the player
Yekta Sönmez built his career in the lower tiers of Turkish football before Pendikspor came calling. He was part of the squad that won the Turkish third-tier title in the 2022/23 season.
Born in Izmir, Sönmez started out with Ünye 1957 in 2021 before moving to Erzincan Ulalar the same year. In 2022 he joined 24 Erzincanspor, the club with which he claimed his league title. A short spell at 1954 Kelkit Belediyespor followed in 2023, before he returned to Erzincanspor that same year.
In September 2024, Sönmez signed for Pendikspor on a contract running until June 2027. He did not break into the first-team squad for the 2024/25 First League season, however, and was loaned out instead. The first loan took him to Kahramanmaraş İstiklalspor, where he made nine league appearances and helped the club win promotion to the second tier through the play-offs. He was loaned out again in the second half of that season, this time to Mardin 1969 Spor.
Sönmez did feature for Pendikspor in a friendly against Sivasspor on 23 July 2024, starting the match. In the summer of 2025, he moved on again, joining Balıkesirspor on a one-year deal.
