The club spent the 1990s and 2000s working upwards through the divisions the slow way: the Third Division title in 1996–97, the Second Division in 2007–08, then the First Division in 2012–13.
The name came later than the club. Founded in 1975 as Al-Najah, it became Al-Orobah in 1995.
A runners-up finish in the Second Division in 2020–21 was part of it; promotion out of the First Division in 2024 completed it.
In March 2025 FIFA barred the club from registering new players over an unpaid transfer fee of $150,000 owed to the Welsh side The New Saints for Brad Young.
Football is one department among several. The club also runs swimming, boxing, volleyball, karate, weightlifting, badminton and esports sections, and is owned by Badr bin Nawwaf bin Abdulaziz.
