Toyota built the team in 1948 as a company squad, the Toyota Pacers, part of the industrial-league culture that carried Japanese corporate basketball for decades. The Toyota name stayed on the shirt even after the club dropped it from the name itself: in 2000 the team became Toyota Alvark, and when the B.League launched in 2016 it settled on Alvark Tokyo, sponsorship intact. The word itself is a compound, Arabic for electricity fused with the English "AL-V-ARK" — the ark that carries victory — chosen to describe a team built to play fast.

That identity held up. Two B.League Premier titles in 2017–18 and 2018–19 came either side of an Asian title in 2019, when Alvark won the FIBA Asia Champions Cup. Daiki Tanaka was named MVP of both that continental run and the domestic league the year before. Further back, three JBL Super League titles in the 2000s and an Emperor's Cup collection stretching from 2007 into 2026 show a club that has rarely gone long without silverware, corporate team or not.

The Tokyo Derby against Sunrockers Shibuya gives the club its sharpest local rivalry, with Tochigi Brex contesting them for the East Division on the standings rather than on history. Home games moved in October 2025 to Toyota Arena Tokyo, a 10,000-seat venue in Koto Ward's Aomi district, after years at Yoyogi National Gymnasium and the Ota City General Gymnasium.
