Working as academy director alongside president Roger Ouégnin, who had begun professionalising ASEC Mimosas in 1989, Guillou opened an academy in 1993. ASEC then won the CAF Champions League in 1998, and the following year, in the CAF Super Cup final against Espérance de Tunis, Guillou sent out a side of 17- and 18-year-olds from the academy — and won 3-1.
Guillou left in 2001, and the club felt it: talent drained away. ASEC's 2010 title was followed by a barren spell that did not end until 2017.
ASEC Mimosas was founded in Abidjan on 29 April 1948 and plays in black and yellow, which earned it the nickname Les Mimos. Its home is Stade Robert Champroux, though for the biggest occasions — including the Derby d'Abidjan against arch-rivals Africa Sports National — the club moves to the larger Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, which holds around 35,000.
