ASV Salzburg

Gerhard Fellner learned the game in Itzling, in ASV Salzburg's youth ranks, before a career that carried him on to Austria Salzburg, Austria Wien, Admira Wacker, LASK, and across to Scotland with Falkirk and St Mirren. When the club marked its hundredth anniversary in 2026, it named him its most famous son.

The club he left behind started out in 1926 as ATSV Itzling, part of the workers' sport movement the authorities banned in 1934. It was refounded in 1946, fielding a football side again the same year, and did not take its current shorter name until 2015, after decades as ASV-ASKÖ Salzburg.

Its best football came early. The 1964/65 Landesliga title sent ASV up into the Regionalliga West, then Austria's third tier, where it stayed until 1969. Relegation from the 2. Landesliga in 2006 sent it back down to 1. Klasse Nord for three seasons; under coach Andreas Hayek it climbed again, twice, in 2012 and 2020. The rest of its honours sit on the same regional ladder — Landesklasse titles in 1975 and 1983, Nord-class championships in 1949, 1960 and 1998 — the currency of amateur football in Salzburg province, a different world from the professional club Fellner went on to play for. That club, now known as Red Bull Salzburg, shares the city and nothing else with ASV.

Closer to home, the fixture that matters is against ATSV Salzburg, from the city's Nord district; their meetings in the 1. Landesliga are billed locally as a Stadtderby. In August 2023 one such match was called off by the referee, a decision that led to a formal investigation and drew attention well beyond regional football.

Matches are still played in red and white, at a ground that holds 378 seats.
