Salzburg is a city built on Mozart and the Alps, but for decades its footballing loyalty belonged to a club in violet and white, not the red-and-white franchise that plays there now. That older club, SV Austria Salzburg, took shape on 13 September 1933 through a merger of Hertha and Rapid, and over the following seventy years passed through a string of names tied to whoever sponsored it — Sparkasse, Casino, Wüstenrot — while the shirt colour stayed constant, earning it the nickname Die Violetten.

Under coach Otto Baric the club won its three Austrian championships in 1993/94, 1994/95 and 1996/97, and in that first title season reached the UEFA Cup final, losing to Inter.

On 6 April 2005, Red Bull bought the club outright. Within weeks the shirts had changed to red and white and the name to FC Red Bull Salzburg, severing the link to the Austria-Stadion identity built up since 1933. A group of supporters refused to follow the rebrand. On 7 October 2005 they registered a new SV Austria Salzburg, starting again in the seventh tier of the Austrian league system, keeping the violet and white and taking on Max Aicher Stadion, a 1,566-capacity ground, as home.
