Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz

Bregenz's football history begins in the summer of 1919, when the club took shape on the shore of Lake Constance as FC Bregenz. Those colours came later, forced by circumstance: in 1945, French occupation authorities ordered the club renamed Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz. The club's shape changed more than once against its own will — a merger with FC Rätia Bludenz in the early 1970s briefly turned it into FC Vorarlberg, and in 1979 a bigger union with FC Dornbirn 1913 produced IG Bregenz/Dornbirn, a combined entity that lasted until 1987 before the two went their own ways again.

The club reached Austria's top flight twice in the twentieth century — in 1954, only to drop straight back down, and again in 1966. The strongest run came between 1999 and 2005, capped by fifth place in the 2003/04 Bundesliga and a runners-up finish in the Austrian Cup in 1999, lost to SV Ried. Then the money ran out. In 2005 the club was thrown out of the league, declared bankrupt and dissolved — and rebuilt within days, refounded on 27 June 2005 under new legal standing. Jürgen Kauz, a former Austria international, led the side through that reconstruction on the pitch. The climb back took years but produced its own honours: the Vorarlbergliga in 2007 and 2015, promotion through the Regionalliga West in 2023, and the 2. Liga title in 2019 — the club's deepest post-bankruptcy push toward the top flight yet.

Home games are played at the ImmoAgentur Stadion, a 12,000-capacity ground on the lake, of which around 4,000 seats are covered — known in earlier years as the Casino-Stadion and Bodenseestadion.

Nothing in Vorarlberg carries the weight of the derby against SC Austria Lustenau. The fixture with FC Dornbirn 1913 runs it close, sharpened by the memory of the two clubs once ground into a single team — the Ländle derby that split apart again after 1987.
