La Unión sits on the Gulf of Fonseca, and the nickname El Ciclón del Golfo carries the place into the team's identity rather than the other way round. Founded in 1950, Atlético Balboa plays its home matches at Estadio Marcelino Imbers, a ground that holds 4,000 — modest enough that the crowd noise has nowhere to go but onto the pitch.

Red and black are the club's colours, worn as a striped home shirt, and the team plays under a second name almost as common as the first: Los Porteños, the port people — a tag that needs no explanation in a city built around its harbour.
