The Primera División de Fútbol Profesional de El Salvador serves as the premier tier of domestic football in the Central American nation. Commonly referred to as La Liga Mayor, the competition operates on a split-season structure that divides the calendar year into two distinct tournaments: the Apertura and the Clausura. This format, which has been in place since 1998, requires every team to play each other twice within each half of the season. The top eight sides from each tournament progress to the final play-offs to determine the title holder. A defining characteristic of the league is its method of determining survival. Relegation is calculated using aggregate points accumulated across both the Apertura and Clausura campaigns. The club finishing at the bottom of this combined table faces automatic descent to the Segunda División. Promotion to the top flight involves a complex playoff system where the winners of the lower tier's two tournaments compete for a direct spot, while the loser enters a relegation/promotion playoff against the lowest-placed team from the Primera División. The competitive balance is historically skewed towards a trio of clubs. C.D. FAS holds the record for the most titles with 20 victories, followed by Alianza FC with 19 and C.D. Águila with 17. Alianza FC enters the 2026 campaign as the reigning champion after securing the Clausura 2025 title. The current squad comprises 12 clubs, a number reached following an expansion in 2015. The league is notable for its intense local rivalries, particularly the Clásico Nacional contested between FAS and Águila, and the Clásico Joven featuring Alianza and Firpo. It also provides three spots for CONCACAF continental qualification. The competition is currently sponsored by Pepsi, leading to the alternative name Liga Pepsi.
