Auckland City

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city, and the football club that carries its name plays its home matches at Kiwitea Street, a ground with room for 3,500 people, of which only 250 have a seat. It is a modest setting for a side that has stood on podiums in Tokyo, Marrakesh and Rabat.

Auckland City was incorporated on 3 February 2004 to enter the first season of the New Zealand Football Championship. The club has stayed amateur by choice as much as circumstance: its players hold jobs outside the game and are not paid to turn out in the navy blue shirts that give the team its nickname, the Navy Blues, even as the club has found the funding to bring in coaches from abroad.

What that amateur squad has done in Oceania has no real parallel. Domestically the record reads much the same way — Chatham Cup wins ran from 2012 through to 2022, before the club lost the 2024 final to Wellington Olympic.

The club's name travelled furthest in 2009, when it beat Congolese side TP Mazembe to become the first New Zealand club to win a match at the FIFA Club World Cup. Five years later in Brazil, Auckland City went further still, reaching the semi-final as the only Oceanian club ever to do so. Their captain that year, Ivan Vicelich, was named the tournament's third-best player. In 2025, at the expanded Club World Cup, Auckland City held Boca Juniors to a draw.

Seven Champions League titles in a row remains the number by which the club is measured.
