Bangor Celtic

Two grounds, one club: Saturday football is played at Beechfield Park in Walkinstown, Sunday football at the Transport Club on Clogher Road, a social club pitch that holds 1,000. Bangor Celtic have arranged their week around that split. The name is a separate matter: it belongs to Bangor in County Down only by coincidence.

The Celts came into being in 1987 as a breakaway from Cashel Villa. Their yellow shirts and green shorts have since turned up in the Leinster Senior League Senior Division, which they won in 2004–05 and again in 2008–09. In between came the FAI Intermediate Cup final of 2006–07, where they lost to Avondale United.

The FAI Cup gave them their best day earlier, in 1998–99. In the second round they beat Drogheda United, then of the League of Ireland Premier Division, and the run ended in the third round against Shelbourne. Later visits were harder: in 2022 they lost 0–4 to Shamrock Rovers, and in 2023 they lost 1–4 to Galway United. Cup football has its own rules, and the club has qualified four times in all.

In 2019 the club merged with Greenhills/Greenpark and moved to Greenhills Park as Bangor Greenhills/Greenpark. In 2022 the club took back its old name and its original crest, and Greenhills/Greenpark went their own way again. Crumlin United, St. Francis and Wayside Celtic are the neighbours they measure themselves against.

The player they point to is Danny Grant, who went from this club to the Republic of Ireland Under-21s. Bangor Celtic have also served as a feeder club for Bohemian.
