Cavese

Football in Cava de' Tirreni started with a group of townsmen who put a club together in the spring after the war ended, with Piero Punzi as its first president. Three years later it absorbed Libertas Sporting Club. The eagle on the badge gave the players their nickname, Aquilotti.

The three seasons in Serie B between 1981 and 1984 remain the highest the club has climbed. In the first of them Cavese went to the San Siro and beat Milan 2-1. The following year they finished sixth. Roberto Baggio played here in 1983-84.

What came after was harder. Expulsion from Serie C in 1986 for match-fixing, bankruptcy in 1989-90 and a restart in the amateur divisions, then exclusion again in the summer of 2011 when the FIGC's licensing body rejected the registration and no appeal was lodged. The mayor, Marco Galdi, said no investor could be found to cover the debts. A new company was assembled from the fragments, bought the old club's intangible assets, and by 2014 was trading as Cavese 1919 again.

The Serie C2 title in 2006 came with the Supercoppa the same year, and the squad that won the C2 in 2009-10 had Lorenzo Insigne in it on loan from Napoli.

The Stadio Simonetta Lamberti holds 7,000, of which 5,200 are certified for professional football.
