Eduardo Pimental put the club together in Bogotá in March 2002, gave it his own name — Bogotá Chicó — and then found the capital had no room for it. Sponsors did not come, the city's football had its own established order, and by January 2005 the club had been reorganised and moved to Tunja, in Boyacá. In Colombia the move is remembered as a refounding rather than a relocation: new department, new name, new supporters.

Three years after arriving in Tunja the club won the Apertura. In the final it beat América de Cali, and the tournament's top scorer, with 13 goals, was the forward Miguel Caneo. The tie went to penalties; Ever Palacios scored the decisive one and the goalkeeper Edigson Velásquez saved another.

What has come more regularly is promotion. Chicó won Primera B in 2003, still under the Bogotá name, then again in 2017, then in 2022, when they beat Deportes Quindío 4-2 on penalties in the final series to climb back into the top flight.

Wason Rentería began his professional career here before moving to Internacional in Brazil, then Porto, Strasbourg, Atlético Mineiro and Rayo Vallecano, and passed fifty caps for Colombia.

Home is the Estadio La Independencia, holding 20,630 since its 2009 rebuild, and the shirt is the blue and white check that gave the club its nickname. A national cup has so far stayed out of reach — the closest attempt ended in the 2011 final, lost to Millonarios.
