«The Ambassadors»
In 1952, a Millonarios side built around Alfredo Di Stéfano and Adolfo Pedernera beat Real Madrid 4-2, and a year later took the small club world championship in Caracas. The football that team played earned it a name that outlasted the results: El Ballet Azul, the Blue Ballet, still used in Bogotá whenever the club is remembered at its best.
That side had grown out of a university team, Juventud Bogotana, founded in 1937, before the club registered formally as Club Deportivo Los Millonarios on 18 June 1946. It settled at Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín, now with an official capacity of 36,343.
Across town sits Independiente Santa Fe, the opponent in the Clásico Bogotano. Neither club has dropped out of Colombia's top flight since the national championship began in 1948, which gives the fixture a weight few Colombian derbies carry — two clubs who have never had to watch the other from outside the division.
Millonarios play in blue and white, known officially as Los Embajadores, the Ambassadors. The club has also added three Copa Colombia titles, the most recent in 2022. In the record books, though, they are known best by one number: 16 Colombian championships, more than any club in the country's history.
