That came on 11 May 1949, when the club took its formal shape in the Santander capital — some accounts push the origin back a year, but the 1949 date is the one the Colombian federation recognises.

For most of what followed, the club's ambitions were measured in promotions rather than titles. It won the second division in 1995, dropped back, and won it again in 2015. Twice it reached a Copa Colombia final, in 2009 and again in 2012, and twice it lost. A separate tournament win, the Torneo Adecuación of 1996–97, has never been counted by DIMAYOR as a national title, which left the 2024 trophy standing alone.

The break came in the 2024 Apertura. Bucaramanga beat Independiente Santa Fe in the final to take the Primera A championship — the first in the club's history.

The colours are gold and black, and they have not always been left alone. In 2016 the club switched to red; by 2020 the yellow and black were back. The nickname that stuck through all of it is Los Leopardos , though supporters also use Búcaros.
