About the player
In the 40th minute of the first leg of Independiente Medellín's 2023-II title decider against Junior, José Ortiz played. Medellín lost the match 2-1 and then fell in the penalty shootout that settled the title.
Ortiz came through the academy at Deportivo Pasto. A year at Atlético Junior preceded his move to Medellín in 2023.
Across three seasons at Medellín he made 82 appearances and scored four goals. Beyond the final, the spell included an own goal against Deportivo Español in the Copa Sudamericana, an injury that kept him out of the quarter-final against Lanús, and, in March 2026, a brace against América de Cali in a 2-1 win. Win Sports named him man of the match for an earlier game against the same opponent during the 2024/25 season.
Ortiz has not been capped by Colombia's senior side, though he has featured for the under-23 team. His contract with Medellín was dissolved by mutual agreement in June 2026, and the following month he signed for Atlético Bucaramanga as a free agent on a three-year deal.
