Chita's fixture crosses the Baikal borderlands: home games against Buryatia, from Ulan-Ude, are billed as the Zabaikalsky derby, and Irkutsk sides such as Zenit have supplied a longer run of meetings in Zone Vostok over the years.
The club grew out of the Trans-Baikal Railway, which put together Lokomotiv Chita in 1974. Under that name it spent stretches of the 1970s and 1980s in the Soviet Second League and, from 1992, several seasons in Russia's First Division. In 2006 the club lost its professional licence, dropped back to the Second Division and was renamed FC Chita.
The club topped Zone Vostok of the PFL Championship in 2016/17 — and then turned down promotion.
