Daejeon Korail sit in the K3 League, South Korea's third tier, still carrying the railway identity that gave the club its name. The nickname "Iron horse" is not decoration: the club was set up in 1943 as the football team of the Chosen Government Railway, under Japanese colonial administration, and its successor, Korail, still runs it.

What survived was the link to the railway rather than any fixed home.

Daejeon Korail won the old Korea National League twice, in 2005 and 2012, then took the competition's post-restructuring championship three times, in 2013, 2015 and 2018. A run to the Korean FA Cup final followed in 2019, ended by a 4-0 aggregate defeat to Suwon Samsung Bluewings.
