Dundalk

Oriel Park is close to the centre of Dundalk: 4,500 for a league night, cut to 3,100 seated when European visitors come to town and the stadium has to satisfy UEFA's rules. The club moved there in 1936 and has not left since — as a works team for the Great Northern Railway, playing rugby before switching codes in September 1903. The railway link lasted until 1930, when the side broke away and took the name Dundalk A.F.C.

What Dundalk built afterwards is a trophy case: 14 League of Ireland titles, 12 FAI Cups, seven League Cups. The run that people still talk about came under Stephen Kenny , a former Dundalk player who returned as manager and won four championships in a row between 2015 and 2018, then took the club into the group stage of the Europa League. Further back, Tommy McConville made 580 appearances across three separate spells between 1964 and 1986, an Ireland cap along the way, and a stint in the NASL with Washington Diplomats before he came home.
