Waterford

Waterford is a port city on the River Suir, in the province of Munster, and the club named after it has spent close to a century being called by more than one name. It began life as Waterford FC in 1930, became Waterford United in May 1982, and stayed that way for over three decades until Lee Power, who took over the club in November 2016, put the original name back in place on 20 January 2017.

The six league titles the club won between 1966 and 1973 belong to a spell that has never been repeated, and the FAI Cup wins sit either side of the club's identity crisis — 1937, when Waterford FC beat St James's Gate 2–1, and 1980, a 1–0 win over St Patrick's Athletic under the Waterford United name. Finals lost in 1979, 2004 and 2009 fill out a cup record that has more often gone the other way in the years since.

Cork City remain the fixture that matters most, the Munster Derby carrying a weight the calendar doesn't give to games against Limerick clubs, even though geography puts all of them in the same corner of the country.

Home games are played at the Waterford Regional Sports Centre, known locally as the RSC, which holds 5,500 and has stayed the club's ground through every change of name and ownership above it.
