Promotion to what is now the Challenger Pro League did not come easily for Royal Excelsior Virton.

The club traces itself to Excelsior Football Club Virton, formed in the town on 14 April 1922 as successor to a short-lived side called FC Saint-Laurent Virton. The name has shifted since — Excelsior Sporting Club Virton after the war, then Royal Excelsior Sporting Club Virton once the King granted the club its royal title in 1951, settling into its current form, Royal Excelsior Virton, in 1995.

Stade Yvan Georges has hosted the club throughout, built in the 1920s on what had been the drained marshland of Pré Jacquet.

Virton's best run in the Belgian Cup came in 2002, when the club reached the last sixteen and were knocked out by Genk, that season's national champions. Locally, the fixture that matters most is the derby against RSC Habay-la-Neuve, known in the region as the Derby gaumais.
