«The Broch»
Fraserburgh's fiercest football rivalry lies just down the Aberdeenshire coast in Peterhead. The two clubs meet in the Buchan Derby, a fixture with a shared root: when Fraserburgh played its first match in 1910, the opponent was Peterhead too.
The club itself came out of a campaign that began in 1909 and closed the following summer, when Fraserburgh Football Club was put together; no exact founding date survives. Its nickname, the Broch, borrows the town's own local name, and it has turned out since in black and white stripes at home, sky blue away.
Bellslea Park holds 3,000, with 480 of them seated.
In 1959 the club beat Dundee 1-0 in the Scottish Cup, one of the most quoted giant-killings in the competition's history. 11 years later Bellslea Park staged a different kind of fixture, a charity match against Jock Stein's Celtic, arranged in memory of the lifeboat crew lost with the Duchess of Kent.
Charlie Duncan managed the club for 27 years, from 1984 to 2011, and his spell brought the Highland League title in 2001-02 and the Highland League Cup in 2005. The championship returned in 2021-22, a fourth for the club, though the promotion play-off that followed ended in defeat to Bonnyrigg Rose. In the seasons since, Fraserburgh has stayed near the top of the table without adding a fifth, while still collecting the regional Aberdeenshire Cup most years.
Two brothers, Harry and Wilf Low, were among those who set the club up in 1910 before turning professional themselves: Harry played for Sunderland and Aberdeen, while Wilf, known as the Laughing Cavalier, made 367 appearances for Newcastle United and won 5 caps for Scotland.
Cup football has its own rules, and Fraserburgh was reminded of that again in the fourth round of the 2024-25 Scottish Cup, beaten 0-5 by Rangers.
