Gomel

Winning the Belarusian Extraliga only once, in 2003, still gives Gomel its reference point: the same season the club took the domestic cup, and the pairing of both trophies has not been repeated since. That title also carried the club into the IIHF Continental Cup final in 2003–04, where it lost 2–6 to Slovan Bratislava, and a second final appearance followed in 2018–19, lost to the Belfast Giants.

The Belarusian Cup has become the closer habit: Gomel has taken it in 2007, 2012 and 2017 on top of 2003, four wins spread across a decade and a half. The trophy itself carries the name of Ruslan Salei, the Gomel-born defenceman who reached the NHL and died in the 2011 Yaroslavl air disaster; the club he came through still plays for a cup named after him.

On the ice, the captaincy has sat with Mikhail Khoromando, a defenceman who has stayed with the club long enough to become its senior figure while forwards and goaltenders have rotated around him. Gomel also runs a farm side, Rysi Gomel, feeding into the Higher League, which gives the senior team a pipeline rather than reliance on the transfer market alone.

None of it stirs the emotions of the Polesie Derby, the meetings with Metallurg Zhlobin that draw on the two towns' shared stretch of the Polesia region rather than on the trophy count. Those games are played, as every home fixture is, at the Gomel Ice Palace, a rink holding a little over 2,600 that has stayed the fixed point for a club whose city gave it both its nickname and its name.
