Groningen U21

Robin Kelder wears the captain's armband this season, born on 25 March 2005. That has been the arrangement since the team took shape as the reserve side of FC Groningen: a squad built to prepare players for the first team or, more often, for a career worked out below it. Luciano Valente and Thom van Bergen have both had call-ups to Jong Oranje this season, a detail that matters more to a scouting report than to a league table.

The team plays as Jong Groningen in the U21 KNVB Divisie 1, sharing the Euroborg and the club crest with the senior side rather than carrying its own identity. No trophy has come with the arrangement, and none is really the point. What the shirt is meant to prove is different: that a player who wore it went on to wear something bigger. Arjen Robben came through the Groningen academy from the age of twelve and was playing first-team football by sixteen; Virgil van Dijk arrived as a youth player in 2010, from Willem II, before the route to Southampton and beyond; Hans Hateboer went the same way, out through the academy and eventually to Atalanta. None of them won anything at this level either. It was never why they were there.

Green and white, the city's own colours, have marked the club since 1971, and the rivalry that still means something down at the Euroborg — the Derby van het Noorden against SC Heerenveen — is felt at every level the club fields a team, U21 included, even if it draws a fraction of the crowd the first team gets. For now the task for Kelder and the rest is the same as it has always been at this level: play well enough, often enough, to be noticed by the coaches upstairs.
