Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City once sat close to 50,000 people on wooden benches, before a stampede killed 83 spectators there in 1996. It carried the name Mateo Flores until 2016. That reduced, safer stadium is where Guatemala's women play their internationals, and where, in 1999, they beat Costa Rica 2–0 in front of 12,000 fans to win the first UNCAF Women's Championship — still the team's clearest mark on the region.

The national side, known as Las Chapinas, took shape in 1997 once the country's first women's league had been established, and stepped onto the international stage the following year with an 11–0 win over Honduras. Captain Magnolia Pérez finished that 1999 UNCAF tournament as both top scorer and best player. Since then the team has settled into a lower tier of regional results: bronze at the Central American Games in 2001, 2013 and 2025, and bronze again at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2010. Their high point in CONCACAF's own championship remains a fourth-place finish from 1998.

The current captain, Ana Lucía Martínez, has built a playing career in Spain, with Rayo Vallecano, Sporting de Huelva and Madrid CFF, and in Italy with Napoli and Roma — experience that sits apart from the domestic game most of her teammates come through. Forbes Central America and the Caribbean named her among its 100 Powerful Women for 2019–2020.

Guatemala play in blue and white, and their next assignment is the sort that has defined the team for a quarter of a century: another regional tournament, and another attempt to get back to where the 1999 side once stood.
