Port-au-Prince has organised Haitian football since before FIFA had ever heard of the country. The Haitian Football Federation formed in the capital in 1904. It joined FIFA in 1934 and was among the founders of CONCACAF in 1961.
The best of the national side's history sits in the 1970s. Haiti had already taken the CCCF Championship in 1957, but 1973 brought the CONCACAF Championship — a title no other Caribbean nation has won before or since. The side that carried that form into the 1974 World Cup was led by captain Ernst Jean-Joseph and forward Emmanuel "Manno" Sanon, who finished with 37 goals in 65 caps for the team and scored the country's first-ever World Cup goal, against Italy.
Two Caribbean Cup titles followed later, in 1979 and 2007. The team plays under the name Les Grenadiers, taken from the anthem of the Haitian Revolution, in blue at home and white away. Its ground, the Stade Sylvio Cator in Port-au-Prince, is cleared for 10,500 spectators at international level. The record crowd came in 1991, when close to 30,000 filled it for the women's CONCACAF final.
Trinidad and Tobago have become the closest thing to a fixed rival, a series that has reached 31 meetings with barely a match between the two sides on the ledger. Haiti's own record traces back further, to a first international played at home in Port-au-Prince: a 1-2 defeat to Jamaica on 22 March 1925.
