Football arrived in Costa Rica as an organised game in 1921, the year the Federación Costarricense de Fútbol was set up and the national side took the field for the first time, beating El Salvador 7–0 in Guatemala City.

Paulo Wanchope's goal against England in 2002 is the one still replayed, and a year earlier, in Mexico City, Costa Rica had done something rarer still: beaten Mexico 2–1 at the Estadio Azteca.

Regional silverware runs deeper than the World Cup record suggests. Three CONCACAF Championship titles, the last in 1989, sit alongside seven CCCF Championships won between 1941 and 1961 and eight Copa Centroamericana wins stretching into 2014. Against Honduras, the fixture known as the Clásico Centroamericano, the two sides have now met 73 times with barely anything separating them on the overall record.

Home games are played at the Estadio Nacional in San José, a 42,000-capacity ground known locally as La Joya de La Sabana, the jewel of the savanna.
