Across town from Hapoel Nof HaGalil sits Maccabi Akhi Nazareth, known for decades as Bnei Nazareth, and meetings between the two have carried the name City Derby long enough that a Ma'ariv report from 1986 already treated the rivalry as old news.

The club has changed its own name twice, each time following the town's. It started out in 1962 as Hapoel Kiryat Nazareth, became Hapoel Nazareth Illit in 1973 once the settlement itself was renamed, and switched again in July 2019 after residents voted to call their city Nof HaGalil.

Most of the silverware belongs to the climb through the lower divisions in the 1970s and 1980s — Liga Alef and Liga Bet titles won on the way up. The clearest success came much later, in 2021, when the club took the Toto Cup Leumit with a 3–0 win over Hapoel Petah Tikva in the final. A run to the Israel State Cup final followed in 2023–24, stopped by Maccabi Petah Tikva. The best league finish, fifth place in the Ligat Ha'al, still goes back to the club's first season in the top flight, 2004–05.

Few players are remembered here the way Ibrahim Basit is. The Ghanaian forward spent three seasons at the club between 2012 and 2015, scoring 20 goals in 80 appearances, and left a mark few since have matched.
