Hibernian U21

Scott Brown's career began in Hibernian's youth ranks before it carried him anywhere else, one name among a long line of academy graduates. Kenny Miller and Steven Fletcher went the same way before him; Ryan Porteous and Jack Brydon are among the more recent arrivals to have come through the same age groups.

That pipeline goes back further than any of the names on it. Hibernian's second-string sides were already lifting the Edinburgh 2nd XI Cup in the late 1870s, and by the 1940s reserve honours were arriving almost as routine, among them the Scottish 2nd XI Cup and the Reserve League Cup. Between 1949 and 1955 the reserves even held a place in Scottish League Division C, a tier of the pyramid long since folded away. The Scottish Youth Cup followed at age-group level, most recently in 2017, and the development squad topped its national league twice, in 2008 and 2018.

That continuity broke in 2019, when Hibernian withdrew the U21 side from league competition and turned to friendly fixtures instead. The following year, as the pandemic shut down routine football everywhere, the academy's operations were mothballed. What remains now plays out of the Hibernian Training Centre in Ormiston, East Lothian, a training base rather than a purpose-built ground, holding around 1,000 when the gates open.

One fixture still matters regardless of where it sits on the calendar: the meeting with Hearts, contested now as the East of Scotland Shield, a trophy older than the sides that play for it and an annual date since 2004. Hibees against Hearts is still called the Edinburgh derby, and it is what this level of the club has to measure itself against, alongside the Challenge Cup and whatever friendly comes next.
