Indonesia have never reached the FIBA World Cup. Regionally the picture is different: Tim Garuda took SEA Games gold in 2022, beating the Philippines 85-81 in the final under coach Miloš Pejić, with Marques Bolden's 18 points. The best showing remains a fourth place at the 1967 ABC Championship and a fifth at the Asian Games.

The federation behind the team, PERBASI, was founded in October 1951 and brought Indonesia into FIBA the following year. The nickname Tim Garuda, after the mythical bird on the national emblem, has stuck longer than any home ground: matches once played at Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta now draw larger crowds to the Indonesia Arena, built with the 2023 World Cup in mind and holding around 16,000.

No opponent occupies the team the way the Philippines does. The two sides have traded SEA Games and FIBA Asia Cup results for years, and Manila remains the benchmark Jakarta measures itself against — the win that mattered most in 2022 came at the Philippines' expense, and the next SEA Games final either side reaches will likely mean going through the other again.
