Busan, 2002. Down the stretch of the Asian Games bronze medal game against the Philippines, the shirt Kazakhstan wore was the same gold it had worn since the federation joined FIBA the year after independence, and the man carrying it was Vitaliy Strebkov, still regarded as the most influential player the national team has produced. The win gave the Snow Leopards their only Asian Games medal.

The nickname comes from the animal that lives in the mountains ringing Almaty, and the team has never had to explain it beyond that. Five years after Busan, at the 2007 FIBA Asia Cup, a group built around Anton Ponomarev pushed to a fourth-place finish, losing the bronze match to South Korea; players from that side still get called the best generation the country has fielded. The closest was an eighth-place finish in 2013, and the Olympics and the World Cup have stayed out of reach altogether.

What keeps the team competitive now runs through two domestic clubs, BC Astana and BC Tobol, which supply most of the current squad, including Ibragim Konyssov and Dmitriy Gavrilov. Games against Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan carry the sharpest edge, framed by Central Asia Basketball Association qualifiers rather than any named derby, and it is in that company — not against the region's traditional Asian powers — that Kazakhstan measures its progress year to year.

The federation still points back to Busan when it talks about what the team is capable of.
