Kleve

They call themselves Butterfritzen, a name that has followed Kleve's support since a margarine factory owned by van den Bergh kept the club's forerunner in business. The tag outlived the factory and gave the present-day side its own nickname, de Botter — Low German for butter.

1. FC Kleve itself is younger than the story behind its name. It formed in 2000, when VfB Lohengrin 03 Kleve merged with SC Kleve 63. The new club dropped Lohengrin's red and white for red and blue, the colours it still wears.

Kleve plays its home matches at the Bauunternehmung Eroglu-Arena, previously known under names including the Volksbank Arena and the Getec-Arena before sponsors changed. The club has spent its history in the Niederrhein amateur pyramid, winning the Landesliga Niederrhein in 2001/02 and again in 2017/18, and the Verbandsliga Niederrhein in 2002/03. Its one venture into the Regionalliga West, in 2008/09, ended in relegation at the first attempt.

The closest Kleve came to silverware beyond the district was the 2019/20 Niederrhein Cup final, lost 1-3 to Rot-Weiss Essen. No DFB-Pokal campaign has followed. The club continues in the Niederrhein leagues, chasing a way back toward the level it touched only once, in 2008.
