Carlos Varela arrived in Köniz having already won a Swiss title with Basel in 2002. He was one of several former top-flight players the club brought in between 2011 and 2016, alongside the Argentine forward Miguel Portillo, with promotion out of the 2. Liga interregional as champions in 2012, then a second-place finish in the 1. Liga Classic the following year, converted through play-off wins over Zug 94 and Terre Sainte. In 2014 the club finished runners-up in the Promotion League, the third tier.
The high point came in the 2015/16 Swiss Cup. Köniz beat Grasshopper 3-1 in the last 16 and reached the quarter-finals.
Sportplatz Liebefeld-Hessgut on Jägerweg holds 2,600. Köniz is the largest football organisation in the town, running roughly 29 teams.
Founded on 1 July 1933, the club in black and white pushed three times for the second tier — in 1977, 1978 and 1984 — and failed each time. The 2020/21 season ended in 15th place in the Promotion League and relegation to the 1. Liga.
No national championship or cup has ever been won.
