Münsingen

Football in the Aare valley south of Bern is a matter of neighbours, and Münsingen sits in the middle of that stretch of villages and small towns where every side is within a short drive. The rivalries that matter to FC Münsingen are the regional ones, settled on a ground that holds 1,400 and gives most of that space to people standing.

Sportanlage Sandreutenen is the club's home, and its shape tells you what kind of football gets played there: 200 seats, 1,200 standing places. Nobody comes for the view from a stand. On a full day the terracing does the work, close enough to the pitch that a decision overturned by the referee is heard about immediately.

The colours are red and black, worn since the club took its name in German — FC Münsingen, plain and unchanged.

Münsingen itself is a municipality in the canton of Bern, the sort of place that supports one senior club rather than several. That has shaped the club's reach: the catchment is the town and the villages around it, and the players tend to come from the same postcode as the supporters.

All of it goes back to a summer's day in 1928. The club was founded on 1 June that year, and nearly a century on it still plays in the same town, under the same two colours, on a ground where standing is the default.
