Pujilí's biggest football story starts with a title, not a famous name. La Unión won the Segunda Categoría de Cotopaxi in 2019, and two years later, in a final against Atlético Saquisilí, the contest came down to a penalty shootout, and La Unión held its nerve.
In 2024, La Unión beat Macará, a Serie B club, 2-0.
Armando "Piripi" Osma, a Colombian who had been Luis Fernando Suárez's assistant with Ecuador's national team, including at the 2006 World Cup, took charge at La Unión in March 2025. Two weeks later, he died during a training session.
