About

The Copa Ecuador, officially known as the Copa FEF Ecuador, operates as a national knockout cup competition within Ecuadorian football. Organised by the Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol (FEF), it sits outside the standard league pyramid, distinguishing itself by being open to clubs from all levels: Serie A, Serie B, Segunda Categoría, and amateur leagues. This inclusivity provides a pathway for provincial and lower-division teams to reach national and continental stages, a feature not found in the league structure.

The tournament follows a single-elimination format. Early rounds consist of single-leg matches, often with lower-division teams hosting. Semifinals are played over two legs, while the final is a single match at a neutral venue. The 2025 edition featured 49 teams, including 16 from the top tier, 10 from the second tier, and 21 from the third tier, alongside two amateur sides. There is no promotion or relegation associated with the cup.

Originally founded in 1970 to select a representative for the Copa Ganadores de Copa, the competition was discontinued after its inaugural year. It was reinstated in 2018, with the first modern edition played in 2019. The FEF took over organization from the Liga Profesional de Fútbol del Ecuador during the 2018 restructuring. The 2021 and 2023 editions were cancelled, the former due to the pandemic and the latter due to financial disputes regarding broadcasting rights.

El Nacional is the most successful club with two titles (1970 and 2024). Other winners include LDU Quito (2019), Independiente del Valle (2022), and Universidad Católica (2025). The 2025 champion is Universidad Católica, who defeated LDU Quito 3–2 in the final. The winner qualifies for the Copa Libertadores and the Supercopa Ecuador.
