The club took shape on 26 March 1971, wearing red and black from the start — colours that earned it the nickname Rojinegro.

The name fits a club whose identity was built in Serie B rather than the top flight. Técnico Universitario has won the second division six times — in 1977, 1981, 1999, 2002, 2011 and 2017.
