About the player
Mateo Castano was born in Bogota.
From there his career took him around Colombian football's second and first tiers. He joined Deportivo Pasto as a free agent in 2022, then moved to Boyaca Patriotas in September 2023, where he made 24 appearances without finding the net. A switch to Real Cundinamarca followed, and it was there that Castano had his most productive club spell to date: 42 matches and four goals across the 2024/2025 season.
In January 2026 he left Colombia altogether, joining Tecnico Universitario in Ecuador. The move has given him the heaviest workload of his career so far — 23 appearances, all as a starter, for close to 2,000 minutes on the pitch. He has scored four goals, one from the penalty spot, added two assists, and picked up nine yellow cards along the way.
Castano has not featured for Colombia at senior international level, and his career has so far been built on steady movement between clubs rather than long spells at any one of them. What stands out is the consistency of his output once given regular minutes, from that early penalty in Bogota to his current run in Ecuador.
