Two local sides, Lucan Celtic and Dodsboro, gave the club its beginning. Lucan United was the result.

A second merger followed in 1999, with Intel F.C., and it put the club back on firm footing in the Leinster Senior League. Lucan United won the Senior Division for the first time in 2023–24 and added the Charlie Cahill Cup the same season, beating St. Mochta's FC in extra time. The season before, they had taken the LSL Metropolitan Cup, 2–1 against Bluebell United.

The FAI Cup gave the club its bigger days out. In 2019 they reached the Round of 16 and lost to Crumlin United. In 2022 they went to Dalymount Park to face Bohemians in the Second Round; over 900 supporters travelled, and Lucan United lost. That same season they reached the semi-finals of the FAI Intermediate Cup.

Home is Westmanstown Road, a ground of about 2,000 capacity that also carries the name Copper Face Jacks Park. The colours are red and white stripes.
