Macarthur FC has won the Australia Cup twice, in 2022 and 2024.
It came together from a merger of the "United for Macarthur" bid and South West Sydney Football Club, an initiative pushed by Campbelltown City Council, which lodged the application with Football Federation Australia in December 2017. Brett Emerton, a former Australian international, fronted the bid. The A-League admitted the club in December 2018, the name was confirmed the following May, and Tommy Oar signed as its first player in January 2020.
Mark Milligan, the inaugural captain, scored the club's first official goal in that match, against Western Sydney Wanderers — fixtures between the two, both drawn from Sydney's west, have become known as the Battle of the West. Home games are played at Campbelltown Sports Stadium, which holds 17,500.
Ante Milicic coached the club through its first two seasons, succeeded in 2022 by Dwight Yorke, before Mile Sterjovski took the job. Yorke was later awarded unfair-dismissal compensation of $290,000.
