MSV Duisburg Women

The PCC-Stadion sits in Duisburg's Homberg district, off Westender Straße, with room for 5,000 across the whole ground, though matchday operations run at 3,000. It is a separate address from the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena, where the men's team plays, and that separation says something about how the women's side has had to make its own way in the city.

That side did not exist under this name until 1 January 2014. It was formed as the direct successor to FCR 2001 Duisburg, which had filed for bankruptcy the previous year. MSV Duisburg took over FCR's license and its place in the second Bundesliga, and nearly the entire FCR squad walked across into the new club. The trophies from that earlier era belong to FCR, not to MSV: a German championship in 2000, three German Cups, and a UEFA Women's Cup in 2009, won with a 6-0 aggregate rout of Zvezda-2005 Perm in the final. Under the MSV name, the closest the club came was winning the 2. Frauen-Bundesliga in 2015/16 to earn promotion back to the top flight.

The following years brought relegation in 2020/21 and a return to the second tier in 2022/23, then a harder blow. The men's team dropped into the Regionalliga in 2024, and the financial strain that followed left the women's side without sponsors to fund a 2. Frauen-Bundesliga campaign. The DFB confirmed on 4 June 2024 that MSV Duisburg had withdrawn its license application. Coach Thomas Gerstner departed at the end of that season, the professional squad was disbanded, and the club dropped as far as the Niederrheinliga, the fifth tier, for 2025/26 — a league it won, with a plan to reach the Regionalliga West again in 2026/27.

Whatever level they play at, the Zebras still meet SGS Essen in the Ruhrpott derby and Rot-Weiss Essen in the Niederrhein derby, fixtures that outlasted the club's own reorganisation.
