Neftochimic Burgas

Few Bulgarian clubs have gone out of existence, on paper, as often as Neftochimic Burgas. Construction workers building the city's planned petrochemical plant formed the side in 1962 under the name Stroitel — "the builder" — and renamed it Neftochimic two years later, once the plant itself was running. The identity has rarely stayed settled since: the club went bankrupt in 2014, was rebuilt in January 2015 by merging its own supporters' clubs with PFC Burgas, then had its licence pulled again in 2021 and had to restart in regional amateur football. It won its group in the 2023/24 season and returned to the Treta liga.

The best of it came in the 1990s. Neftochimic finished runner-up in the A PFG in 1996/97, its highest league placing, and took the PFL Cup in both 1995/96 and 1996/97. It reached the Bulgarian Cup final in 1999/2000, losing to Levski, and the semi-finals in 1994/95 and 2005/06. The one European run, in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup, followed a win over Cypriot side Omonia in the qualifying round.

Known as the Sheiks and playing in green and black, the club has stayed at the Lazur, a ground that has changed name along with it — Neftochimic, then Naftex, now also known as efbet Arena — but not size: 18,037 seats.
