Cameroon has answered Nigeria in four Africa Cup of Nations finals — 1984, 1988, 2000, 2019 — sharpened further by the "Jollof Derby" the Super Eagles play out against Ghana.

The Nigeria Football Federation that runs the team dates to 1945, though the side itself did not step onto a pitch for an official international until 8 October 1949, a year after an unofficial tour of the United Kingdom. Green and white have stayed the colours ever since.

The Africa Cup of Nations has been won three times, in 1980, 1994 and 2013, but the gold medal from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics sits apart from those. Nigeria came from behind to beat Argentina 3-2 in the final, and it was Emmanuel Amuneke who scored the winner.

Rashidi Yekini remains the team's all-time top scorer and the first African to score at a World Cup, back in 1994, while Jay-Jay Okocha is the name supporters reach for when the conversation turns to the most gifted player the country has produced. Ahmed Musa has since taken the appearance record past both of them.

None of it, though, has stretched to the one prize that has eluded every generation of Super Eagles: a place in a World Cup final.
