Dar es Salaam is a coastal city, and its football takes its national colours from there: the Taifa Stars carry the country's name into every stadium in East Africa. The federation behind the team, the Tanzania Football Federation, was formed in 1945. When Tanganyika and Zanzibar united in 1964, the team became Tanzania, and that same year the federation joined FIFA, followed by CAF a year later.
The rivalry with Kenya and Uganda defines much of what the Taifa Stars are known for at home. A 2-0 win over Kenya in the 1980 World Cup qualifiers is still spoken of, even as a 3-2 defeat to the same rivals at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations showed how quickly that fixture can turn.
Regionally, Tanzania has been the team to beat: seven CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup titles, stretching from 1964 to 2011, gave the country a claim on East African football that continental tournaments long withheld. The Africa Cup of Nations proved a harder stage — Tanzania reached the round of 16 before Morocco eliminated them 1-0.
Erasto Nyoni holds the appearance record with 107 caps.
