Oviedo Balonmano Women

Oviedo has never lacked for handball, and the women's game there has spent forty years finding its level under a shifting name. What started life as Club Deportivo Estadio Asturias, put together by Javier Elósegui alongside José Manuel Prieto and Juanjo Ruiz on 18 July 1986, has since become Lobas Alimerka Oviedo. Elósegui, who had played for both Real Oviedo and Real Sociedad, led the club as president until his death in 2025; Paulina Guerrero has taken over since.

The Lobas have made a habit of the top flight without settling there. Promotion via the División de Honor Plata in 2014–15 lasted one season before relegation in 2016; a second promotion, this time through the División de Honor Oro in 2022–23, again ended in relegation the following year. A third route back to the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola is now set for 2026–27, so the pattern gets another test.

Silverware has come in smaller pieces alongside the league movement — the Copa Principado Femenina twice, most recently for 2025–26. Aida Palicio is the name the club has set apart from the rest: her number 2 shirt has been retired, which at a club that has changed its own name three times is a notable gesture.

Matches against BM La Calzada, the Motive.co Gijón side, carry the weight of the Asturian Derby, a key fixture in the region's women's game. The Florida Arena holds 900 for those nights, a small enough room that the promotion push for next season will be felt directly by whoever is sitting in it.
