About

The Liga Guerreras Iberdrola operates as the premier professional women’s handball competition in Spain. Officially designated as the División de Honor Femenina de Balonmano, it occupies the highest position at Level 1 of the national handball pyramid. The tournament was established in 1952, with the inaugural season commencing shortly thereafter, and remains under the direct governance of the Royal Spanish Handball Federation (RFEBM).

The current structure comprises 14 clubs, a figure that increased from 12 participants at the start of the 2024–25 campaign. Each side engages in a double round-robin schedule, playing 26 matches in total during the regular phase. Victory yields two points, a draw one, and a loss none. The four highest-placed squads progress to a championship playoff. Semifinal ties are contested over two legs, with aggregate scores deciding advancement; if necessary, goal difference and a penalty shootout determine the outcome. The championship final adopts a best-of-three format, granting the higher-seeded team the advantage of hosting the first and third matches.

Historical dominance is held by Balonmano Sagunto, formerly known as Medina Valencia, Íber Valencia, and Mar Valencia, which has secured 27 titles. This record surpasses Super Amara Bera Bera, who holds 10 victories. Recent success saw Super Amara Bera Bera claim the title following a playoff victory against Atticgo Balonmano Elche. The competition’s identity has shifted through sponsorship eras, notably as Liga ABF between 2003 and 2011, before adopting its present name which honours the Spanish national women’s team.

Below the top flight, promotion involves direct advancement for the leading two clubs from the División de Honor Oro Femenina, alongside a playoff for the third, fourth, and fifth positions against the División de Honor Plata champion. Conversely, the bottom teams from the top tier face relegation to the same second division. This pathway ensures a structured progression for clubs aiming for the elite level of Spanish women’s handball.
