Liga ASOBAL (Spain) 2026/27

The Liga ASOBAL stands as the premier professional handball competition in Spain. Its origins trace back to 1958 when it was established as the "División de Honor" under the auspices of the Spanish Handball Federation (RFEBM). Management shifted in 1990 when the Association of Spanish Handball Clubs (ASOBAL) assumed control, renaming the tournament to its current title.

The structure involves sixteen teams competing in a double round-robin format. Each side plays thirty matches across the season, with results determined by a standard home-and-away schedule. There are no playoffs for the championship; the title is awarded to the team finishing at the top of the final standings. This format ensures that consistency over the full campaign remains the primary metric for success.

FC Barcelona holds a dominant position within this hierarchy. They have secured thirty-three titles and previously achieved a remarkable streak of sixteen consecutive championships spanning from 2011 to 2026. As the current champion, the club continues to set the standard for performance in the league.

The competitive landscape includes teams such as Hollabrunn UHC, Burgos, BM Villa de Aranda, BM Torrelavega, Anaitasuna, and Malaga. These clubs vie for position against the reigning champions. The bottom teams face relegation to the División de Honor Plata, with a playoff spot reserved for the fifteenth-placed Liga ASOBAL side against the top team from the second tier.

Official recognition as a professional league came in 2022, with ASOBAL formally constituted as a professional entity in 2023. While the Copa del Rey operates as a separate knockout competition, the Liga ASOBAL remains the definitive measure of league dominance in Spanish handball.
