São Luís sits on Brazil's northern coast, capital of Maranhão, and for a century it has measured its football against one name before any other. Sampaio Corrêa took shape there on 25 March 1923, wearing yellow, green and red — colours close enough to Bolivia's flag that the club has carried the nickname Bolívia ever since, still heard today as "Bolívia Querida".

No side from Maranhão has matched its record: 37 state championships, the most recent taken in 2024. Sampaio Corrêa is also the only club from the state to have won Brazilian national titles in three separate divisions — Série B in 1972, Série C in 1997 and Série D in 2012, the last two won without a single defeat — and to have added both regional cups on offer, the Copa do Nordeste in 2018 and the Copa Norte in 1998.

Matches are played at the Estádio Governador João Castelo, known locally as the Castelão, which holds 40,149; when a fixture calls for something smaller, the club moves to the Nhozinho Santos instead.

The under-20 side trains and plays under that same tricolour, inheriting an identity built by the first team long before it has titles of its own to show for it.
