São Januário takes in seniors on matchday, but the boys who train at CT Moacyr Barbosa rarely see it — Sub-20 fixtures are settled at Nivaldão, the Estádio Nivaldo Pereira out in Nova Iguaçu, a ground that holds a few thousand at most. It is a modest stage for a pipeline that has sent players to Inter and Manchester City. Vasco's academy has never worked in isolation from the first team's story: the parent club traces back to 21 August 1898, though it began life as a rowing outfit and only fielded a football department from 1915. The Sub-20 side carries no separate founding date of its own — it exists to feed the senior squad, and its record is measured in what its graduates go on to do rather than in club history.

2024 was the year that record read best. Vasco's Sub-20 beat Flamengo's youth side twice over — 5-1 on aggregate in the Copa Rio final, then 1-0 in the Campeonato Carioca decider — taking both regional titles in the same year against the same rival. Twelve months later they were back in a Copa Rio final and lost it, beaten by Botafogo. The fixtures that matter most for a Rio academy side are still the same three derbies the first team plays: against Flamengo, against Botafogo, against Fluminense.

What the trophies don't show is the traffic in and out of the academy. Alex Teixeira and Souza both came back to Vasco in 2024, well past their own academy years, a reminder of how tightly the club's identity binds itself to players it raised decades apart. Further back, Bellini started here before captaining Brazil to the 1958 World Cup. But the name most associated with what this academy can produce is Philippe Coutinho, gone to Inter Milan at 18 and, by 2025, the subject of talk about a return to the club that first put a ball at his feet.
